Presentation Overview:

Over the last couple of decades there has been a dramatic increase in the number of white goods in domestic properties. Burgoyne – experts in scientific forensic investigations of fires, explosions and other major incidents have seen a corresponding increase of the number of fires involving these appliances.

In the presentation, we will look at trends Burgoyne are seeing during their investigations and will detail the underlying faults behind some of the well-publicised manufacturer recalls.

Speaker:

Dr Ian Wallis-Guy - a Partner at Dr J H Burgoyne and Partners LLP having joined the company in September 2009. Since then, he has undertaken over 650 cases investigating fires and explosions within domestic, agricultural and commercial premises, as well as vehicles. Many of these investigations have also required consideration of building construction materials and fire spread issues.

Ian is a member of Burgoyne’s’ contamination assessment team and he has investigated other types of incidents including paint spills, chemical exposures, carbon monoxide poisonings and cases involving intruder alarm systems. He has provided expert opinion to Counsel and has been an expert witness in Civil Court.

Ian’s high profile cases include Selsey School (2016), Fleet Services (2016) and Mandarin Oriental Knightsbridge (2018).

Audience:

The session is aimed at all CII/PFS members or guests with an interest in increasing their knowledge on white good fires and manufacturer recalls.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the session, attendees will be able to identify:

  • trends in white goods fires
  • common causes of fire in appliances
  • knowledge of the current recalls
  • the science behind the recalls
