Origins of London Marine Insurance: A Historical Overview to Celebrate our Centenary Year

  • Tue 15 Sep 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
    • Dr Adrian B. Leonard

As this is the 100th year of the Cambridge Institute, we think it would be appropriate to step back in time. This webinar will reveal the astonishing history of marine insurance underwriting in London by reaching back to Lombard Street in the 1400s, explaining the origins of the Lloyd’s market, and shedding light on this critical industry’s 300 years of world leadership from London. We will explore the earliest surviving London marine insurance policy, from 1547; find out where the great London market traditions originated; learn how a man named Candeler gained a monopoly over policy preparation in the 1570s; and discover what forced the minor wine merchant Daniel Foe to change his name to Defoe and become a writer (answer: underwriting losses).
