Hawkins Webinar - Should a Building be Demolished Following a Fire?

In this session the speaker will demonstrate the methodology and technology Hawkins uses to conduct structural assessment of fire damaged structures.

The Learning objectives for the session are:

• An assessment of steel buildings, and reinforced concrete buildings, which are probably two of the most common types of buildings, after a fire.
• To discuss how a visual inspection should be conducted, based on an understanding of the behaviour of steel and concrete materials under elevated temperatures.
• To discuss sampling and types of testing, both destructive and non-destructive tests, that can be used to ascertain conditions of the building.
• Conclude how an assessment can be made – that is – whether a building, or parts of the building can be retained, can be repaired, or should be demolished.

The speaker for this session is Yang Dang. Yang graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2008 with a first class honours degree in Civil Engineering. He was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew gold medal for graduating as the best student. After graduating, Yang joined Arup as a Graduate Engineer in Singapore, where he has designed the steel connections for the hotel atrium of integrated resort Marina Bay Sands. In 2009, Yang studied for a Masters degree at Stanford University. As part of his study, Yang undertook research to review constitutive modelling of engineered cementitious composites for earthquake engineering applications.

Yang returned to Arup in Singapore following the completion of his study at Stanford University. During his 2 years with Arup, Yang has worked on the Fusionoplis Phase 2A project, where he was responsible for the design of superstructures consisting of post-tensioned systems, and the Capitol project where he was involved in the design of basement structures.

For the following 7 years, Yang predominately worked on the design and site management of a number of large-scale projects with roles as both a consultant and contractor. During this time, he was stationed in Dubai periodically to work with local consultants and clients for projects in the UAE.

Yang has over 12 years of research and industry experience in Singapore, the Middle East and United States. He has extensive experience in structural engineering on a wide spectrum of projects in the commercial, industrial, residential, and infrastructure spheres. He also has practical knowledge of geotechnical engineering, such as foundations and temporary earth stabilising structures.

Yang is currently an Associate based in the Hawkins Singapore office. He is fluent in both English and Mandarin.
