2016 02 Monthly News June to July

Welcome to our second Cheltenham and Gloucester Institute newsletter.

Insurance Charities Awareness Week 2016 took place from the 20th to the 24th June. The purpose of the week is to spread awareness within the insurance industry of the work the Insurance Charities do. If you’re not aware of the important work they carry out do visit their website http://www.theinsurancecharities.org.uk/ to see how they support past and present insurance, and insurance related, employees in the UK & Ireland by providing financial and emotional support to those in need.

Exam results from the April written exams were received in June, we hope everyone achieved the results they were hoping for.

If you are continuing to study please let us know if there is any help you would like and we will see what we are able to do.

Our New Generation group met in June to discuss final plans for their networking and charity events for the 2016-17 council year. They also held their first social event on the 23rd June at Ten Pin in Gloucester. Young professionals from Thompson Heath and Bond, Pro Global, Ageas and Ecclesiastical met for food, drink and a couple of games of ten pin bowling. Photos from the evening will be on the group’s webpage, so keep an eye out for them.

Our first CPD event of the 2016-17 council year held on the 23rd June was a PFS presentation A Pension by Another Name, it was designed to give attendees:

-A good understanding of how LISA works

-A high level understanding of the complementary strengths of LISA and pension plans and the respective clients they may be suitable for

-An appreciation of the key challenges and potential solutions for consumers using either LISA or pensions to save for their retirement.

Attendees enjoyed a buffet lunch before Fiona Tait Pensions Specialist of Royal London began the talk.

Our second CPD event Different professions, different perspectives which we held on the 5th July looked at the ways underwriters, actuaries and accountants look at insurance data in different ways to answer different questions.

The seminar clarified underwriters, actuaries and accountants different views of data to enable attendees to have an appreciation of the different perspectives within an insurer and looked at the advantages and disadvantages of the ways that data can be interpreted.

Attendees enjoyed a buffet lunch before David Westall Director and principal trainer at Delta Omega began the talk.

Our CPD programme continued on the 26th July when we held the lunchtime lecture Post flooding, drying techniques & procedures.

Participants at this event gained an increased understanding of the way in which restoration focused damage management helps get customers back in their homes more quickly, whilst dramatically reducing the cost of claims.

Areas of discussion included avoiding the cost and disruption of interior demolition, the types and uses of targeted drying and understanding moisture "when is a structure dry?"

During our 2015-16 council year by attending our CPD events and signing the register attendees were entered into a prize draw for a £25 gift voucher. The prize draw took place at our 26th July CPD event and the lucky winner was Louis Harford from Pro Global Insurance Solutions.
