New Zealand earthquakes talk
New Zealand is known as the ‘Shaky Isles’ for good reason. It is situated on the edge of the south Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ and experiences some 15,000 minor earthquakes a year. In 2009 Christchurch, with a population of 400,000, was shaken by an extreme quake of magnitude 7.2 causing devastating damage to property and infrastructure as well as loss of life. Ian Hickling, a major loss adjuster at Cunningham Lindsey’s Birmingham office, was seconded to New Zealand in the aftermath of a series of powerful earthquakes and aftershocks and Ian relayed his experience to a packed lunchtime meeting in Coventry. Ian’s talk covered the geological events that cause earthquakes, the nature of resultant damage and the role of insurers and loss adjusters in helping policyholders overcome the short-term and long-term financial impact.
