View event detailsExeter Institute - Lloyds of London Tour
Lloyds of London: An Overview Lloyd's of London, often simply known as Lloyd's, is a British insurance and reinsurance market located in London's financial district. Unlike most of its industry counterparts, Lloyd's is not a single insurance company; rather, it is a corporate body governed by the Lloyd's Act of 1871 and subsequent Acts of Parliament. It operates as a partially mutualised marketplace within which multiple financial backers, grouped into syndicates, come together to pool and spread risk. These underwriters, or "members", are a mix of both corporate entities and private individuals. The origins of Lloyd's can be traced back to the coffee houses of London in the late 17th century, particularly Edward Lloyd's coffee house, which became a popular spot for sailors, merchants, and ship owners to discuss insurance deals. Over time, Lloyd's evolved from a coffee house to the world's leading insurance market, pioneering many modern insurance practices and covering a wide range of complex risks, from natural catastrophes to cyber attacks.
