January Lunch
Our January speaker will be Nigel Blore, former Head of Insurance for Transport for London. Nigel began his career at Prudential in November 1972 looking after overseas agencies and branches, and his work involved both underwriting and claims. During this period, he became an ACII in 1976, with the FCII following in 1978. When the Prudential pulled out of Property and Casualty insurance in 1991, Nigel joined British Telecom as a senior manager in their risk and insurance team, where he was responsible for Mergers & Acquisitions, complex procurement and supply contracts, the risk and insurance aspects of European operations, and insurance issues arising from Marine and aerospace operations. He was also involved in their captive.
Nigel joined Transport for London in early 2003 as Head of Insurance, and developed close relationships with London market insurers, helping to raise TfL’s standing with insurers at a time when rail business was very unattractive. Nigel has been an active member of AIRMIC for 25 years, and of the Institute of Risk Management for almost as long, being elected Fellow in 2010.
Nigel’s talk is entitled “My Life in Insurance” and will consider the following key points:
- Events such as legislation and major losses during Nigel’s career that had significant impact upon either the organisations he was working for and/or the insurance market
- Significant projects in which he was involved, particularly whilst at TfL and the part the TfL captive (managed by Willis Towers Watson locally) played in them
- The importance of personal relationships, openness and trust in insurance, linking this with the new Insurance Act, and how it should not change things greatly if relationships between insurer, broker and client are working properly.
The talk will take place at Moore's Hotel Wednesday 18 January at 12.30pm. (£11 for members of the Insurance Institute of Guernsey and £13 for non-members). Do remember that the attendance fee is payable whether lunch is taken or not. Please feel free to encourage non-member colleagues to attend should this be an area of interest but, please note, members of the Insurance Institute of Guernsey will receive priority in the event of capacity being reached.
Attendance will provide 30 minutes of Structured CPD under the Chartered Insurance Institute's CPD scheme.
