A new campaign by Ipswich Central (a local business group) has begun to get city status for Ipswich.

Ipswich Central has started an engagement project, declaring "it's time for an upgrade". The project is about "gathering evidence" to present a case to the local council, so it could be prepared for when the next round of city bids begins. Ipswich Central Chief Executive Sophie Alexander-Parker said the engagement project needed to include views from everyone. She said: "This is about gathering the evidence, building the narrative and being able to present a case of support for city status; Ipswich Central fully supports Ipswich Borough Council in submitting a bid if and when the time comes again".

Central Suffolk and North Ipswich MP, Dr Dan Poulter, has stated that he was "fully supportive" of the campaign and a spokesperson for Ipswich Borough Council has said they believed Ipswich "deserves to be a city".

There are currently 55 cities in England. If granted, Ipswich would become the first city in Suffolk. It has been widely quoted that becoming a city would bring more investment, tourism and opportunities to Ipswich and Suffolk. Becoming a city could also raise the profile of Ipswich. However there are still a lot of questions being asked – How would the process work? How would benefits be realised? Are there any downsides? Does it really make any difference? And of course, Will Ipswich Town Football Club have to change its name?

This is a real, current business and economic debate and it would be good for us all to be better informed.

This is a fantastic opportunity to network with like minded people. In addition food and drinks will be provided. Tickets are available below:
