CPD lunchtime lecture

A presentation by Stephen Wilkinson, Chartered Financial Planner on behalf of the Insurance Institute of Leeds.

The importance of high quality legal and financial advice cannot be overestimated.

This is true in many areas of advice but particularly so in relation to the complexities of paying for care. For people facing this challenge themselves, or on behalf of a family member for the first time, it can be extremely daunting. If a client lacks capacity, the responsibility on advisers is greater and how the public views of our profession will be based on the quality of the advice and guidance this vulnerable group receive.

In this one hour lecture, Stephen will work through a case study to highlight the typical challenges elderly clients face and how an advisor can provide solutions and support.

Learning objectives

By the end of the presentation, you will be able to discuss:

  • what is a vulnerable client, the issues of capacity and what do we mean by lack of capacity
  • powers of attorney
  • what help the state provides
  • the benefits of cash flow modelling
  • dealing with property
  • end of life planning
