    • Charity - Show Racism The Red Card

Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity. It was established in January 1996, thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.

In 1990s Newcastle, Shaka was at a petrol station near St James Park when he was confronted with a group of young people shouting racist abuse at him. After one of the group realised that they had been shouting at Shaka Hislop, the Newcastle United football player, they came over to ask for an autograph.

This interactive workshop, hosted by charity Show Racism The Red Card, features a range of thought provoking topics and discussion points that will enable individuals to start a journey of self-reflection based on their current values and beliefs. Delegates will also be encouraged to consider how their cultural and social experiences may have helped develop any unconscious bias within their own worldview.

This 60 minute session will dive deep into three key areas:
- Barriers to Equality and The Role of Unconscious Bias
- The Language of Equality: Reflecting on the Power of Language
- Anti- Racism and The Black Lives Matter Movement

There will also be a Q&A at the end of the workshop.

Objectives:

  • To understand the various types of discrimination and explore how beliefs, values and attitudes drive behaviour.

  • To raise awareness of the nine protected characteristics within the Equality Act.

  • To gain an awareness of employer and employee duties in relation to equality and diversity, and inclusion.

  • Explore the different types of bias, cultural/social and experience along with exploring the problems that they create.

  • Raise awareness of the consequences of discrimination and the effects on people and how to challenge common stereotypes, misconceptions and prejudicial attitudes in society.
