Fire marks
To commemorate the 350th anniversary of The Great Fire of London the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters are holding an auction to sell four fire marks.
Fire insurance marks were introduced after the Great Fire of London and mark the beginning of the insurance industry in the UK. The plaques were fixed to the front of buildings showing the building had insurance, if a fire broke out the fire brigades would check for the mark before putting out the fire.
Starting in London this practice gradually spread across the UK. Today the Chartered Insurance Institute building in London has an impressive collection of fire marks decorating their walls from across Europe.
If you are interested in fire marks you have the opportunity to own one by bidding on the fire marks up for auction. The money raised will be donated to the Loss Adjuster Benevolent fund, the Fire Brigade Benevolent Fund, and the Alzheimer’s Society. http://www.theinsurancecharities.org.uk/charity-auction-fire-marks/
