Liverpool Insurance Institute Careers Day
written by Marj Murphy
On Wednesday, 5 July, the Insurance Institute of Liverpool and Financial Liverpool held its 2nd Career Day. Seventy seven school students, with ages ranging from 16 to 18, attended a fully packed day of events and talks at the Crown Plaza, Liverpool. The objective of the day was to raise awareness of insurance amongst school children in Merseyside. Tracy Fisher, President of the Liverpool Institute, said that the Careers Day helped towards achieving her ambition of promoting the CII and the world of insurance to young people.
The event was organised by members of the Liverpool Insurance Institute Council and hosted by Sandra McDonald and Casper Bartington from the CII.
Students participated in two fun events relating to risk and listened to insurance professionals who worked in local firms . Twenty one Mentors from local insurance companies and council members ensured fair play and helped the students. This was very important when playing the Discover Risk game. Here students became a para planner investing their client’s money, all of whom who had totally different attitudes to risk.
They decided who was a shark, a defender, a seeker, a hunter or a balancer and what to invest in. This was an extremely popular game and was very, very competitive. The prize of the state of the art head phones for each student on each table may have helped feed the students already competitive spirit. .
Mentors were also involved, with the students, in a speed networking session. The mentors answered a whole range of questions relating to their careers, past and current jobs.
- Activities enjoyable but could have been more
- The event provided a good insight into Risk & Financial services.
- Students gained a lot from having the mentors on their tables
- The interactive element worked really well
- The chips at the Crowne Plaza were given a big thumbs up by one and all!
- A thought provoking but fun day was had by all
We would like to thank our sponsors RSA, Griffiths and Armour, Blankstone Sington, Pavis Financial QM Costs and AVIVA for making this event possible.
