Session 3: A day in the life of a broker
What is the IIM Professional Development Programme?
Our Professional Development Programme is a series of introductory lectures designed at targeting those new to the insurance industry in Manchester. First launched at the IIM's CPD Masterclass 2014 in association with the IIM’s CPD Committee, the programme will provide attendees with an exclusive insight into the insurance world as a whole.
Primarily aimed at those who are not yet qualified, the programme will offer support to those beginning their studies as well as individuals just looking to get more involved with the CII and strengthen their understanding of the insurance industry.

Find out all about the ins and outs of being a broker from four brokers, Natalie Albert (Broking Manager), Daniel Winn (SME New Business Account Handler), Andrew Wells (Corporate Account Handler) and Lucy Bradford (Claims Handler), all based at Caunce O'Hara.
Who should attend? Those new to the insurance industry in Manchester, or not yet qualified.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Outline the key responsibilities of a broker, e.g. servicing a book of clients, and working closely with colleagues and contacts within the industry
- Describe 3 or 4 key day-to-day roles e.g. 'The Renewal Process, 'The Claims Process' or 'The New Business Process'
- Evaluate the positive and negative aspects of the role
- Discuss the importance of qualifications and experience for brokers (as well as their significance within the industry)
- Identify future career development for brokers, including various doors that are open in the industry and avenues that your career can take
