Conference to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Manchester Bomb

The 1996 Manchester bombing was an attack carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) on Saturday 15 June 1996. The IRA had sent telephoned warnings about 90 minutes before the bomb detonated. The area was evacuated, but the bomb squad were unable to defuse the bomb in time. Insurers estimated that the bomb, which exploded on Corporation Street in Manchester city centre, caused an estimated £700 million worth of damages.
The Insurance Institute of Manchester is hosting this one day conference, hosted by Bill Turnbull former BBC Breakfast anchor, on the anniversary of the attack to reflect upon the impact that the event has had on both our industry and our city, and to recognise the great achievements over the last 20 years rebuilding Manchester. Featuring special guest speakers including:
Phill Hill loss adjuster. The session will explore the Loss Adjuster’s experience of the event and the diverse effects of the blast on the assessment of damage, the importance of communication and availability of information and resolving issues with business interruption cover in the absence of damage. Finally how would Insurers response differ 20 years on. By the end Phill's session, delegates will be able to:
- identify essential information and advice
- establish clear lines of communication
- understand the insurance cover and lease liabilities
Steve Coates chief underwriting officer for Pool Reinsurance Co Ltd. By the end of Steve's session, delegates will be able to identify:
- the history of Pool Re, Manchester and how the claim was dealt with
- how the terrorism threat has changed and will continue to do so
- how terrorism is different from other catastrophe perils
- how Pool Re underwrite terrorism
- how terrorism might develop as a class of insurance in the future

Presenter on counter terrorism - regional Counter Terrorism Unit. By the end of the session, delegates will be able to identify:
- the capability of Her Majesty’s Government to independently assess the terrorist threat
- what the international terrorist threat to the homeland is
- the likely methodology of an attack in the UK
Paul Hannam motivational speaker on resilience and rebuilding from adversity. By the end of Paul's session, delegates will be able to:
- shift their mindset to embrace adversity as a positive learning experience
- cope more effectively with challenges, and flourish during professional and personal crises
- use adversity to your advantage, and become stronger and more effective
- apply powerful strategies for being more resilient based on research from business, health and psychology
- apply the skills and mindset so they can handle every challenge in their lives more effectively
Biographies
Bill Turnbull has been presenting BBC Breakfast since 2011. He began as a weekend presenter and in 2008 became one of the main weekday presenters for the programme which is broadcast on both BBC1 and the BBC News channel. He joined the BBC as a reporter for BBC Radio 4’s Today programme in 1986 and then moved to Breakfast Time in 1989. This is where he reported memorable stories from around Britain and Europe, including the Lockerbie disaster and the Romanian Revolution of 1989. Other highlights in his career include the Moscow uprising in 1991, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the US Presidential elections. A beekeeper and tango specialist, who reported from the USA and anchored network news, Bill is now at BBC Salford Quays, leading the BBC Breakfast team.
Phil Hill is a professional, multi-disciplined Chartered Loss Adjuster with over 26 years loss adjusting experience from a construction background, with in major and corporate, defence, marine property, public sector, construction, technology and railways. Phil is a major loss team leader, international client account manager and technical author who handles significant losses including : nuclear installation, property and business interruption > £157m; development aircraft, aviation business interruption > £8m ; naval vessel under construction, marine business interruption > £3m.
Steve Coates is Chief Underwriting Officer and a member of the Executive management team at Pool Re. Steve has responsibility for all aspects of underwriting and claims, including exposure management and modelling. Prior to this, Steve spent 12 years at Allianz UK, latterly as Head of UK Property and Casualty. He also spent a year with Allianz Australia in 2005/6. Before that he worked for Independent Insurance for 10 years, ending up as UK property underwriting manager. Steve started his career with Eagle Star where he worked in a variety of commercial underwriting roles. Steve is an associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and is also an expert witness in insurance matters.
Mick Timpson BA (Hons) Dip Arch Dist. RIBA is Director of Mick Timpson Urban Design and has been involved in several key Manchester based projects. Mick's relationship with Manchester developed while working as one of EDAW’s consultant designers on the master plan to rebuild the city centre after the IRA bombing in 1996. Mick has also work on the Rochdale Town Centre Regeneration, Holt Town Master Plan and Development Framework and the Bolton Interchange.
Presenter on counter terrorism - This speaker manages CT National Functions at a regional Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU). He has just completed three years at MI5 Headquarters where he was the Duty Officer at the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) and later lead for Strategy and Requirements with the UK police service. As Duty Officer he was responsible for the management of terrorist threat reporting against British interests worldwide. As lead for Strategy and Requirements he was a permanent member of the Security Review Committee directly advised the Deputy Assistant Commissioner (Specialist Operations) on the terrorist threat to the UK, protected persons and the national infrastructure.
Paul Hannam - Paul has 30 years experience as a psychologist, coach, business owner, to explain how to be resilient and learn from adversity. Training a wide range of skills such as employee engagement, leadership, motivation, communication, change management, emotional intelligence, stress management. He has trained over 3,000 business owners, executives, managers and professionals both in the UK and USA.
