WEBINAR - Introduction to Marine Cargo
This Teams presentation provides an introduction to the cover available for goods that are in transit from a seller in one country to a buyer in another one and sometimes on another continent.
The course will introduce you to a selection of goods typically traded throughout the world and the various methods of transport used in getting goods from seller to buyer.
The discussion includes matters such as:
- The reasons why the owners of goods in transit should insure them for their full value and for the widest cover available.
- The types of cover that can be obtained, as provided for by the Institute Cargo Clauses of the London Marine insurance market.
- The risk profiles of goods.
- Typical claims.
- The modes of transport used in a typical carriage of goods.
At the conclusion of this a course delegates will have a basic understanding of Marine Cargo insurance, the perils to which goods are exposed during transit, the types of goods described and how claims for loss or damage during transit are handled.
By the end of this update delegates will have:-
- Acquired a good knowledge of the particular class of marine insurance
It is relevant to general insurance brokers/intermediaries, insurers, and any other market participants.
Speaker bio
John Potter ACII
John is a CII accredited trainer specialising in Marine Cargo ,insurance, which encompasses the insurance of goods which are in transit by land, sea and/or air, as well as the legal liabilities of the carriers of goods by the various modes of conveyance shown.
A career marine underwriter, he spent most of that time with Aviva and its legacy companies, CGU, General Accident, and Parcels and General.
His roles also included regional underwriter and account development for the north-east of England, culminating in promotion to the role of Regional Marine Manager running a team of nine underwriters specialising in marine.
After taking an early retirement package in 2004 he set up his own training consultancy, working mainly for the CII, and a small number of private clients. As part of his training programme, John has delivered training throughout the UK and also overseas in countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Turkey, Germany, Greece, Ghana, Finland, Barbados and the Republic of Ireland.
He is the author of the CII’s study text, Cargo and Goods in Transit insurances, M90, which he originally published in 2010 and has updated it annually. IBAN Number: ISBN: 978 1 80002 109 9 for the print edition or m ISBN: 978 1 80002 110 5 for the electronic version.
John is the founding chairman of the Leeds Marine Insurance Association and currently serves as its Education Officer. He offers training either face to face or via Microsoft Teams.
