Writing to express and not to impress - plain English for insurance professionals

The need to use clear and transparent language is increasingly becoming an issue in the insurance industry. The FCA Thematic reviews and the Insurance Act 2015 emphasise the need for information to be presented in a clear and appropriate way.
Furthermore, the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 sets out the need for insurance professionals to use clear and specific language when delaing with customers.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the seminar you will be able to identify:
• the benefits of plain English in modern business communications
• the need for clear and transparent language in the insurance industry in light of recent legislation and regulatory pronouncements
• typical jargon, cliche, legalese and archaic words and phrases and be able to use credible plain English alternatives
• how style and layout can significantly impact on the readability of correspondence and documents
Speaker Biography
Jeff Heasman is Director for Legal & Insurance Programmes Worldwide at The Pyramid Group. Educated to Masters level in International maritime law (including insurance law), Jeff spent many years working as a litigation executive dealing with cases up to the Court of Appeal and also worked with Crawford & Company as a Senior Liability adjuster.
Since that time Jeff has been a lecturer in the law of torts and Dean of the Faculty of Law at Cavendish University in Zambia as well as a Tutor at Swansea University, preparing international students for the study of law in the UK at Bachelors and masters level. Jeff provides training in insurance law and practice to some of the world's most prestigious organisations in various locations across the globe.
