Event Overview

The presentation will outline the scope of work in which a Forensic Engineer can be of assistance to the insurance industry. It will cover the methodology and benefits of investigating a range of incidents, such as:

Escapes of water and oil, where the likelihood of a positive outcome for insurers is high;

Fires involving plant and machinery, which can involve high value equipment and necessitate extensive investigation to satisfactorily determine the cause; and

Engineering failures, involving plant such as large diesel engines. He will also explain why a multidisciplinary approach, involving engineering specialists and metallurgists, may be required in some incidents.

• The scope of work which can be undertaken by a Forensic Engineer.

• How input from a Forensic Engineer can be of assistance to the insurance industry.

• The need to promptly appoint a Forensic Engineer following an incident.

• That putting together suitable team, including Forensic Engineers, solicitors and loss adjusters, soon after an incident has occurred can be of great benefit to insurers.

About the speaker

Frank Anderson, a degree qualified marine engineer, spent 9 years as an Engineering Officer in the Merchant Navy, a hands-on role involving the operation and maintenance of a range of vessels from oil tankers to passenger ferries and cruise ships. After stepping ashore, he spent 4 years as a Marine Surveyor, serving the insurance industry, before moving into the field of Forensic Engineering, where he been in practice for almost 20 years.

Frank investigates a wide range of incidents, spending approximately half of his time investigating engineering failures, ranging from water leaks to the failure of large industrial plant, such as diesel engines used in power generation and ship propulsion. He also investigates a wide range of fires, but specialises in those involving plant and machinery.

In the course of his work Frank has travelled extensively and has investigated incidents in the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America. He has given expert evidence in civil and criminal courts, arbitrations and mediations, both in the UK and overseas. He has also lectured at conferences, to audiences from the insurance and marine industries, and to the fire service.
