Failure mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries - Forensic scientists view By Simon Munford - Hawkins Forensic Scientists Date - Tuesday 12th June 2018 12.15 for 12.30 start (Please note that this event is 1-hour duration) Venue: Sir Humphries Cripps Pavilion, Old Northamptonians Billing Road, Northampton NN1 5RX Event Overview This presentation will cover the construction, use and safety features of lithium-ion batteries. It will then explore the various failure mechanisms of lithium-ion batteries ranging from ‘safe’ failures to catastrophic failures, which can result in fires and explosions. The recent lithium-ion battery issues with Tesla cars and Samsung mobile telephones will also be examined. The presentation will conclude with a short section on the investigation of lithium-ion battery fires and what is expected to be seen after a fire. The Learning Objectives for this session are After the presentation, the audience will have a better understanding of how lithium-ion batteries work, how and why fires occur, what can be done to prevent them and the expected results of an investigation About the speaker Simon Munford has been an associate at Hawkins for just under five years. He has an MA and MEng in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge and is a member of the IET. International Liability and Nuclear Risks

Event Overview The aims of the session will be to: 1. Give an overview of the nuclear industry and the “nuclear fuel cycle” 2. Provide a summary of the regulatory and insurance requirements of the nuclear industry 3. Outline the underwriting and coverage challenges the industry provides 4. Flag-up common claims scenarios If time permits there will also be a brief commentary on the international casualty market and programmes Learning Outcomes Nuclear risks are not an everyday occurrence for most insurance practitioners. That said, they are more common than many suppose and provide a unique set of challenges. Key points will be: 1. What is a “nuclear” risk? Are they scary? 2. Common myths and misconceptions about nuclear insurance 3. What clients and insurers need to know and ask questions about 4. My client says she needs nuclear insurance? Does she? If so, what information is required? 5. Who writes this stuff anyway? 6. The regulatory background to nuclear insurance About the speaker Will is currently the Underwriting Manager at Nuclear Risk Insurers, formerly known as the British Nuclear Pool. He is responsible for writing a variety of covers, including MD/BI and TPL, for a range of Nuclear Facilities, including Nuclear Power Plants, Uranium Enrichment and Fuel Fabrication. Prior to NRI he spent some 20 years in the London Market including ten years at Munich Re and five years at Allianz Global. His background is mainly in Casualty Underwriting, specifically heavy international casualty programmes. He originally trained as a lawyer and is ACII qualified.
