Getting Involved

What can you do?

Getting involved includes being an ambassador for your office to promote our events, a member of one of our committees that concentrate on a specific element of our activities or part of the main Council who set the direction of the Institute. You may be looking to give something back to the community, gain another skill or looking to broaden your network; these are a few of the reasons why people get involved.

We welcome people from any area of insurance or financial services and you don't need to be a CII member or work in a technical role. We have insurers, brokers, loss adjusters, marketing professionals and solicitors to name a few, from companies of all sizes.

We also have our Next Generation group of young professionals and would encourage anyone who has only recently entered the industry or who is in the early part of their career to join up and get involved. Interaction with this group provides a valuable social network of contacts within the Insurance Institute and to other professional organisations in the region. Check out the Next Generation pages on this site for more details.

We are always keen to talk to anyone who is interested in being part of our local institute; if this sounds of interest to you then please email the Secretary, Claire Smith (claire.smith@ageas.co.uk) who will advise on how to join us.

How the Institute works

Council members undertake a wide range of roles and responsibilities to achieve the aims of the local Institute.

We hold Monthly Meetings which last between one and two hours, The President or Deputy normally chairs the meeting with our Secretary taking minutes.

As well as the above time commitments, depending on the role held within the Council there will usually be an additional hour or two each month progressing actions outside of the meeting. At certain times of the year e.g. approaching the Dinner, the dinner team will be busier than this.

Within the Institute we have various Roles and Responsibilities and sub committees which you can get involved with including

  • President, Vice President, Deputy President and Past Presidents
  • Development Officer
  • Education Committee / Secretary responsible for the organisation and management of lunchtime lectures and seminars.
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Exam Centre Coordinator
  • Charities Visitor undertakes visits to beneficiaries of the Insurance Charities
  • Regional Forum Officer
  • Dinner Committee / Secretary responsible for the organisation of the Annual Dinner
  • Sports and Social Committee / Secretary responsible for the organisation of Sports and Social Event
  • Membership Engagement
  • Charities Awareness Team with Charity awareness and Fundraising Team consisting of Fundraising Officers are responsible for charity initiatives for the Insurance Charities.
  • Communications Officer / Committee are responsible for website updates, development and management of the online booking system and communication in the quarterly newsletter

The Next Generation Council has roles of Chairperson, Education, Secretary, Social Media lead, Treasurer and CPD & Education and comprises young insurance professionals under the age of thirty-five and is responsible for organising many social and sporting events which provide networking as well as charitable fund-raising opportunities.

We also have representation, content and contribution from the Personal Finance Society (PFS) Hants and Dorset region and their Regional Representative is part of Institute Committee.

Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting is normally held in late March, following which new roles are agreed which gives you the opportunity to apply to sit on our Council in a general capacity or in a dedicated role. That could be as our Treasurer, Secretary or as an officer responsible for Education, Membership or the organisation of the Annual Dinner (the first date people look for when the calendar is revealed).

You might have experience and skills in careers guidance, or you might fancy a crack at running the sports & social side of things.

Find out what it's all about and how you can make a difference. If you would like to apply for any positions, please contact the current Institute secretary, Claire Smith. (claire.smith@ageas.co.uk)
