Cyber Insurance - Breakfast Seminar

Cyber Security and The Insurance Industry Learning Objective: A better understanding of the cyber threats posed to insurance companies, and an overview of assessing cyber insurance risks.

The Southampton Insurance Institute welcomes Lawrie Abercrombie. Lawrie joined the British Army in 1978, originally serving with the Royal Hampshire Regiment before transferring to the Intelligence Corps. He saw peace time service in the UK, Cyprus and Germany and, having qualified as an Arabic Interpreter in much of the Middle East and North Africa. He also served on operations in Gulf War 1, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Gulf War 2. His final tour was in command of the Regular Army's top level cyber security team before retiring from active duty in 2005 to start his own Information Security Consultancy. At the same time, he joined the Territorial Army as a Team Leader in the Land Information Assurance Group, a specialist unit at the core of the UK's national cyber security capability. As a Reserve Army officer, Lawrie's primary role was developing cyber capability and was the UK's lead planner for Exercise CYBER GUARD, the world's largest ever multinational defensive cyber exercise which is focused mainly on cyber defence of Critical National Infrastructure.

In 2009, his civilian company merged with two others in the same industry to form Arcanum Information Security Ltd of which he is now the Operations Director. In his commercial practice, Lawrie specialises in cyber security for the 'High Threat Club'; the port and maritime industry and other organisations with high value assets to protect.

He is currently contracted as the Chief Security Officer for a major outsourcing company with a turnover of several billion pounds and over 400,000 sensitive personnel records. Lawrie is a member of the Institute of Information Security Professionals and one of only a handful of Lead Security & Information Risk Advisors certified by CESG, the UK's National Technical Authority for Information Assurance.

The talk will cover The Role of a Cyber Security professional in the emerging cyber insurance market. How assessing risk in a cyber-context works, risk mitigation and assurance and incident response/management & The cyber threat to the small business, with an emphasis on insurance companies. covering possible threats and mitigation to avoid data, financial and reputational loss from being hacked.
