Half Day - Climate Change Seminar
A joint event to be held with the Bournemouth institute, with some great external speakers.
Learning Objectives:
To gain an appreciation of how the UK’s climate is changing and in particular the increased incidence of extreme weather events.
An insight into how climate change is affecting the claims that the insurance industry has to deal with in the UK and the way in which technology is being used to assist in this.
To understand how Flood Re is providing cover for certain types of property that are vulnerable to the risk of flooding and what may change in the future.
To obtain an overview of how insurance companies are reviewing their reinsurance requirements in the light of the changes in the UK’s weather patterns.
Speakers will provide a view:
From the Met Office:
Climate change has been headline news for two decades now. Whilst climate scientists continue to learn about the global drivers of climate change and how they are connected, state-of-the-art climate models are providing more insight into local impacts of extreme events. This presentation will review the key drivers in global climate and consider how the gap to predicting local impacts and extremes is being bridged.
From the Loss Adjuster:
Examples of some of the more recent severe weather events in the UK, how the loss adjusters deal with these and an insight into how technology is being used to change the way in which adjusters work.
From Flood Re:
With Flood Re now seven months into its operation, this will be an update on the story so far, the plans for the future and some of the things learnt in the early days of operation. This will be an opportunity for delegates to ask questions about the Scheme, as well as understand more about the background and importance of Flood Re as a world-first industry initiative.
From the Broker:
How UK Insurers measure their catastrophe exposure from Wind, Flood and Storm Surge losses in the UK and how they subsequently protect against them. The impact of climate change on this approach in recent years and the increased use of flood mapping to monitor accumulations. Including examples from the 2014 Somerset Flooding and the 2016 Cumbria Flooding.
