Learning Objective: Case studies to look for possible pitfalls as to whether an item is a fake or if it is a fraudulent claim. Recognising reproductions, signs of restoration and different antique marks. Attendees will look at illustrated case studies to determine whether an antique item is a fake or fraudulent claim in regard to insurance claims and generally in the market place. How to recognise reproductions, knowing how to detect restoration and knowing your antique marks will all help when buying antiques.
The Southampton Insurance Institute welcomes back Susan Orringe MRICS, ASFVA. With Over 25 years experience in the Arts & Antiques world, Susan brings a wealth of knowledge & humour to her subjects. Her background in the auction world started in a provincial saleroom rising to become head of the Works of Art, Ceramics, Silver and collectables department.
A chance encounter led to a move into the world of Fine Art insurance becoming a specialist loss adjuster within a multi national company. Susan has become known as a broadcaster for the BBC working on such programmes as Flog it, Bargain Hunt and Boot Fair challenge. She established a Fine art valuation business in 2003 carrying out valuations for sale, insurance and probate as well as advising insurers and their representatives in regard to claims involving damage or lost artworks.
She is a member of the Royal institute of Chartered Surveyors and currently sits on the Global Fine Arts board, additionally she is an associate of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers. Above all Susan believes that collecting and ownership of art and antiques should be a rewarding and pleasurable activity which she displays with her infectious enthusiasm for her subject matter.
