Title: The Story of Fire Insurance

Presentation Overview:

Just after the Great Fire of London, Dr Nicolas Barbon first opened his Fire Office, a fire insurance company that offered to pay to rebuild properties if they were “damnified by fire”. This was the first fire insurance company, and was an instant success, so much so that others were quickly following suit and setting up fire insurance companies. Why was it such a success, how did it operate, what happened to the various companies over time. This will be explored during the webinar along with what the Insurance Museum’s plans for telling this story.
